Between dog fights and slaughtered pigs, brotherhood is the last refuge.
Synopsis:
Amid the brutality of daily life in the slaughterhouse, everything around them falls apart. Loyalty and companionship are their only means of survival; in a world where death has become commonplace, brotherhood remains the last act of resistance.
Edgar and Gerson are two illegal Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, working at a small pig slaughterhouse in the Alentejo countryside near the border with Spain. Gerson suffers from chronic kidney failure. To survive, he must recover the kidney he donated to his sister. Edgar offers to help him at any cost. The plan unfolds with cruel precision but descends into absurdity when Gerson’s father finds the kidney in the freezer and fries it with onions.
Amid accidents, kidnappings, absurd deaths, dog fights, and slaughtered pigs, Edgar witnesses his friend’s slow decline as he withers away and dies in his arms, cementing the loyalty that binds them. In the end, Gerson hands Edgar the money he just won from a dog fight and asks him to fulfill his dream: to see the snow.
