This year's selection of short films in competition for the Silver Lynx award returns to Espinho with 50+ films, split between the usual Fiction, Documentary, Animation and Experimental section, celebrating the best batch of 2021's international cinema.
In the Fiction category, we highlight Naila Guiguet's Dustin, one of the most talked about films to compete in Cannes; Closing Time, Italian Tommaso Santambrogio's most recent work, is a funny portrait of a marital discussion where the audience finds itself forced to witness the moment from the most brilliant voyeuristic way possible; Greek director Irene Ganteri's Eva and Jane and croatian filmmaker Sara Grgurić presents us different visions of couples trapped at home, and the different ways they dealt with the situation. Last but not least, we highlight the return of Kasper Møller Rask, who after competing at FEST '19, is now back with Eja Okay, a provoking look at the impact of social media in a teenager's life.
The Documentary section also welcomes back Finnish director Laura Rantanen, winner of Best Documentary at FEST '19, who now presents an experimental work about masculinity. Maalbeek, from Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis, another selection from Cannes, has a radically different approach, but not less impressing: a study about the impact of the Islamic terrorist attacks in Bruxels in 2016.
It's also vital to celebrate a very important return in the Animation category: the polish Tomek Popakul, last year's winner with Acid Rain, now presents Moon, a delicious digression with his characteristic visual style. A couple more highlights are Blue Fear, from French filmmakers Marie Jacotey and Lola Halifa-Legrand, which will certainly leave FEST's audience impressed with its provoking feminist perspective.
Lastly, the experimental section is the most complete ever, with two different exhibitions, which include One Thousand and One Attempts to Be an Ocean, directed by French-Chinese Wang Yuyan, an hallucinatory experience that turned Berlinale's competition on its head, and the most recent visual essay by Irish filmmaker Patrick Hough, The Black River of Herself, a work that has a lot to teach us about the ecologic memory of the landscape of a planet undergoing a climate transformation.
