CRESCINE findings on small film markets, distribution, skills and audience building — and what they mean for emerging filmmakers

24 JUN | 14:00 | ROOM 02

European cinema is rich in talent, but for filmmakers working from smaller markets, the path from production to visibility remains challenging. Drawing on the findings of CRESCINE, this session explores what filmmakers need to understand about audiences, distribution, skills, financing and international circulation in today’s European film landscape.
The session will look at how small European film markets operate, why many films struggle to reach audiences beyond festivals, and what emerging directors and producers can do earlier in the process to improve the life of their projects. Combining research-based insights with professional experience from the industry, the discussion will move beyond policy and data to address practical questions: how to position a film, how to think about audiences without compromising artistic identity, how to use festivals strategically, and how to build a sustainable career from a small market.
