In this session, Mike Valentine and Françoise Valentine will reflect on a career spent bringing underwater worlds to the screen across more than one hundred feature films. Drawing on their experience from productions including The Beach, Trainspotting, Star Wars: Episode I and the James Bond series they will explore the evolution of underwater filmmaking and the creative and technical challenges that have shaped the craft over the decades.
The session will examine underwater camera techniques, lighting, production design and safety, while also looking at the development and use of specialised facilities such as Pinewood Studios' U-Stage. Through stories, examples and reflections from their body of work, Mike and Françoise Valentine will explore the collaboration, innovation and problem-solving involved in creating some of cinema's most memorable underwater sequences.
