La Maestra and Paula are inseparable friends and top swimmers in their team—until a party incident forces them to choose between silence and speaking out, testing their bond. In her debut feature, Fernanda Tovar explores sexual abuse and female solidarity in contemporary Mexico. Winner of the Crystal Bear at this year’s Berlinale, Chicas Tristes pairs striking cinematography with two subtle yet powerful performances, creating a provocative film bound to spark debate.
