The Importance of the Colourist with Duncan Russell

10 OCT // 14h00 // Auditorium

Industry Role: Halo Colourist

Colourists contribute to the mood and look of a film by defining its colours. They work with the director and director of photography to decide the palette; whether it's restrained or hyper-coloured, whether it uses milky colours or primary ones. In this Masterclass Duncan will demonstrate how colourist can better contribute for a successful project.

Duncan has been grading for over 20 years. In that time he has seen many changes and graded in all kinds of disciplines. Starting in film restoration and archive transfer, Duncan progressed first to dailies transfer, feature mastering and then to long form documentaries and dramas.

After a 13 year spell in music videos and commercials that kept him pretty busy, recently he has returned to focusing on his first love: features and dramas. He has worked for the industry's most well known Post Houses and for the globe's most successful brands. In the Televisual poll, he has frequently been voted one the top ten VFX artists in the UK. Boasting an approximate 70/30 artist/geek ratio, he has a love of image making and of exploration and collaboration. He always wants to challenge and to be challenged into doing something new and interesting. Duncan is currently grading Boxing Day (Warner Brothers and Film4), Chasing Agent Freegard (Great Point Media), Christmas Number One (Sky Cinema). He recently graded Romeo and Juliet (National Theatrical and Sky Arts) see the trailer here.
