João Ribeiro graduated in Image at the School of Theater and Cinema, Lisbon.
He has been working as a cinematographer since 1993 and his career includes more than 40 titles, among documentaries, fiction movies and several co-productions between Portugal and countries such as France, Germany, Sweden, Guinea-Bissau, Belgium and Russia.
His name is referred among a new generation of documentary filmmakers who emerged in the 1990s in Portugal, like Catarina Alves Costa, Catarina Mourão, Graça Castanheira, and Sérgio Tréfaut.
João worked in Transe (2006), a Teresa Villaverde’s movie, for which he received several photography awards, including the Lecce Film Fest for Best European Film Photography.
He also collaborates regularly with João Botelho, with whom he made A Corte do Norte (2008), film for which he received the special jury prize of the Rome Festival for Treatment of the Cinematographic Space, and Os Maias (2015), TV mini-series based on the romance of the same name by Eça de Queirós.
In 2016, he shot the movie Cartas da Guerra, by Ivo Ferreira, presented at the Berlinale’s official competition.
Most recently, in 2018, Ribeiro was part of A Árvore, and Snu, which premiered in 2019.
Besides the work as a cinematographer, João Ribeiro also teaches image at the ZeLIG, School for Documentary, Television and New Media in Bolzano, Italy and collaborates in the Doc Nomads course at Lusófona University.
