The Passengers | Canan Çengel | DEU | 15'
The Passengers is a short film that touches upon the concepts of longing, belonging and exile. Painting a psychogeographical portrait of a village in the periphery of Constantinople/Istanbul, the film reflects on the notion of diaspora while hinting at a way to reconnect history and space with collective memory. The director created the screenplay from the poetry and prose of Katina Veikou-Serameti, who had to leave her homeland forever as a child due to the population exchange and who wrote about her lost homeland throughout her life. One century apart and in different countries, poet and director share the same village as their homeland. As a meditative journey, The Passengers aims to transcend borders of national remembrance and invites the viewer to embrace the places we can call home within a world of migration.
