Fiction Jury

Edgar Morais is a director, actor, screenwriter and photographer. Edgar started his career as a theater actor in the Portuguese Golden Globe winning Julius Caesar directed by Luis Miguel Cintra and has since appeared in various productions. As a film actor, he has worked with directors such as Teresa Sutherland, Larry Clark, Victoria Mahoney, Craig Viveiros, Rodrigo Areias, Q’orianka Kilcher, Miguel Nunes, Erick Avari, and Tiago Guedes in films that have screened at festivals including Cannes, Venice, Fantasia, Gothenburg, Thessaloniki, Vila do Conde, and Rotterdam, among others. The recently released film A Cup of Coffee and New Shoes On directed by Gentian Koçi (PÖFF Tallinn Black Nights competition and winner of the Fischer Audience Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival) in which Edgar stars as a deaf man who learns he has a genetic condition that will render him blind was Albania’s official submission to the Oscars and earned him the award for Best Actor at the Prishtina International Film Festival as well as rave reviews for his performance from the likes of Variety and Screen Daily. Edgar's directorial debut, the 2019 short film Heatstroke, screened in competition at various festivals worldwide including PÖFF Shorts, Maryland Film Festival, ISFF Detmold, FEST New Directors New Films Festival and IndieLisboa and won the CinEuphoria award for Best Screenplay. His next short film as a director, 2021’s We Won’t Forget had its world premiere in competition at Palm Springs International ShortFest, and screened at over 25 festivals worldwide including Hamptons, Woodstock, Tirana, Dresden, Rio de Janeiro, Rooftop Films, Ennesimo, Pendance, Mammoth Lakes, and IndieLisboa. The film won both the Grand Jury Prize and the award for Best Editing at the Castrovillari Film Festival, it was awarded the Honorable Mention in the Grand Prix Competition at FEST New Directors New Films Festival, it received the award for Best Acting (Whitney Able) at Cinalfama, and was nominated for a Sophia Award for Best Fiction Short Film by the Portuguese Academy of Cinema. Edgar has directed music videos for several bands including Mothxr and Grammy-nominated Shiny Toy Guns. He is currently in production on various directing projects including his feature film directorial debut filmed in Portugal which he also wrote and stars in alongside Lourdes Norberto, Rita Blanco and Anabela Moreira and a feature film set in Los Angeles with a cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Pia Mechler, Steven Weber, John Robinson, and Lou Pucci, among others. Edgar divides his time between Europe and the USA.
