Duarte Coimbra was born in Lisbon in 1996.

He specialized in directing at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, where he collaborated as an assistant producer in the movie O Meu Pijama (2017) by Maria Inês Gonçales - selected for IndieLisboa 17' (Brand New) -, he was second assistant director in the movie A Barriga de Mariana (2018) by Frederico Mesquita - selected for IndieLisboa 18' (National Competition), and has directed music vídeos for musicians like Luís Severo and Primeira Dama.

He also worked as a script supervisor in the film Encontro Tardio, directed by Pedro Ramalhete (in post-production) - a film that was made with the support for Short-Films from the FDA Foundation. He was also a júri at the Schools Competition in the San Sebastian International Film Festival - ENCINE’17.

In 2018, he started collaborating with IndieLisboa as a short-film programmer in the sections International Competition, Silvestre and Boca do Inferno.

Amor, Avenidas Novas, produced in an academic context, is his debut as a director and had its international premiere at the Critics Week in Cannes Film Festival. The film went off to some of the most renowned Portuguese festivals like IndieLisboa and Curtas de Vila do Conde, where it won the New Talent Award and the Best Film Take One! Award. Duarte Coimbra was also distinguished with the award Prémio Novo de Cinema 2018 (RTP/Antena 3/Cego, Surdo e Mudo) that intends to pay homage to a personality that has stood out in that particular artistic field that year.

Nowadays, Duarte is preparing his next short-film that has as a temporary title O Filme Feliz and also his first feature film, a Portuguese-Brazilian co-production (Uma Pedra no Sapato / If You Hold a Stone), called A Tempestade do Jacarandá
