The fifth day of FEST PRO was dedicated to VFX, with three masterclasses and one roundtable.
Pablo de la Chica, the producer of The Other Kids (2016) and director of Dreams Without Borders (2020), gave us a general view of his promising career and how he works with VFX studios. The audience also had access to various tips and advice on how to plan a VFX production and how to communicate with VFX studios.
Pedro Domingo, Nu Boyana Portugal's CEO, worked on a variety of projects throughout his career. For his masterclass, he brought two case studies on which he worked, JOLT (2021) and Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard (2021). Besides presenting Nu Boyana’s work, Pedro also spoke about the process, the similarities, and the differences between the case studies he showed.
The last masterclass was given by Gary Brown, VFX supervisor behind Paddington 1&2 (2014, 2017), St Maud (2019), Censor (2021), and Baby Driver (2017). With extensive knowledge, Gary showed us different kinds of visual effects and their different uses. Using visual examples, he approached the various tools used and the different processes, as well as the work of a VFX supervisor in and out of the set. No one left the auditorium with doubts about the special effects world.
There was still time for a RoundTable, constituted by Pablo de la Chica, Pedro Domingo, and Gary Brown. The three of them discussed the future of VFX.
