FEST – Training Ground
Training Ground is an annual educational event that takes place alongside FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival. The next edition will take place from the 20th to the 25th of June in Espinho, Portugal.
A varied array of key issues on filmmaking will be approached, including scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, photography, production design, acting, directing, casting, non-fiction filmmaking, make up, pitching, distribution, financing, and many more.

FEST – Training Ground hosts more than 25 masterclasses and 10 workshops during the festival where the public, emerging filmmakers, and film students from all over the world, have access to first-class training through workshops and masterclasses lectured by some of the film industry’s top experts with highly acknowledged achievements.
Every year the program covers as many filmmaking subjects as possible, providing the broadest and most thorough view of the 7th art today. We invite the best talent to transmit their knowledge and our audience has come to expect the best.
The masterclasses will take place in the main auditorium of the Centro Multimeios. These masterclasses will have the duration of 1h30 to 2 hours.
There will also be a wide array of workshops available during the event, that will have a one or two days duration.
Training Ground will have in 2017 its ninth edition. The seven previous editions were a huge success, gathering participants of over 32 nationalities. In 2015 we hosted more than 30 training activities and attracted the attention of top experts, as well as worldwide media coverage.
The feedback from former editions has been very encouraging, with a large number of the audience eager to come back to enjoy our innovative approach on filmmaking training.
When and where?
The event will take place between the 20th and the 25th of June 2017 in Espinho, a tourism orientated city and one of the summer hotspots of Portugal. The city is 15 minutes south of Porto, along the sea coastline.
All activities will be held in Centro Multimeios de Espinho, a modern infrastructure with high quality projection, a planetarium with an IMAX screen, a snack bar and free wireless Internet.
FEST Training Ground takes place in the framework of FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival, one of the most vibrant film festivals in Portugal. Throughout its 11 editions so far, the festival has been dedicated to highlighting and promoting the work of young filmmakers from all over the world creating a privilege space for them to show their work. Participation in Training Ground grants full access to all film festival sessions.
We have no doubt that all participants will find their areas of interest in our programme. The methodology of Training Ground will be a great advantage in guiding their experience. The event is designed in a way that allows each participant to tailor-make their individual programme, according to their interests and priorities ,making it a unique experience. In addition to the official programme and parallel activities, we will also hold Networking Dinners, where participants and guests will share dinner in a convivial and open atmosphere.
All sessions of Training Ground will be in English, for practical reasons. As our guests and participants come from all around the world, this will be the common language.
FEST is a unique communication platform for the participants as, while attending Training Ground, they will also be able to establish a wide network with people from a broad range of countries and backgrounds. Networking is extremely important in the film industry and FEST - Training Ground is a one of a kind opportunity.
