About

FEST – Training Ground is the educational section of FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival.

The tenth edition will take place from the 19th to the 24th of June 2018 in Espinho, Portugal.

It hosts more than 25 masterclasses and 10 workshops during the festival where the participants - emerging filmmakers, film students, film enthusiasts from all over the world - experience first-class training through workshops and masterclasses lectured by some of the film industry’s top experts with highly acknowledged achievements. Beside learning from the experts, participants are able to share their experience and widen their contacts with other trainees in a relaxed but energetic environment.

Programme

FEST – Training Ground is designed in a way that allows each participant to tailor-make their individual programme, according to their interests and priorities.

A varied array of key issues on filmmaking are approached, including scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, photography, production design, acting, directing, casting, non-fiction filmmaking, make up, pitching, distribution, financing, and many more.

It’s divided into three main activities:

Masterclasses - during two hours, the invited professionals take the participants on a journey through their careers, talking about their experience of both success and failure, as well as explaining their work process and how this intersects with the activity of other members of the team.

Workshops - participants get a hands-on approach to several aspects of filmmaking. They are actively involved in exercises and discussions in order to learn techniques and skills associated with a particular craft. The duration of each workshop changes depending on the subject and speaker.

Atelier - in these two-hour sessions, participants have a chance to peek into the day to day work of film professionals. Each of the guests involved will demonstrate and apply their craft on practical examples, allowing a better understanding of their work process and the decisions it involves.

All Sessions are held in English

Networking Activities

FEST is a unique communication platform for the participants as, while attending Training Ground, they will also be able to establish a wide network with people from a broad range of countries and backgrounds. Networking is extremely important in the film industry and that's why there is no VIP section in FEST,

Just as important is the constant exchange of experiences and perspectives that can be found here; they will enrich and widen perspectives and knowledge. It also offers a few parallel activities, designed to provide a solid platform for academic and professional growth and to enhance networking opportunities:

Industry Meetings - a platform where some of the festival guests will be available for participants to discuss and give feedback on their projects in development. These are one-to-one meetings of approximately 15 minutes each. The meetings are set upon request from participants, according to the availability of the expert they wish to meet.

Filmmakers Corner - a space for the participants to expose their work to an audience of their choice in a special screening area. This area will be open throughout the event and can be booked for free by any participant at the Guest Office in Centro Multimeios.

Networking Dinners - Networking at the dinner table. The networking dinners are held every night during FEST and are a place where participants and guests share a traditional Portuguese meal (with vegetarian options) in a convivial and open atmosphere.  NOTE: Networking Dinners require separate registration

Speed meeting - On the first day of Training Ground, two large circles of participants are created on the stage of the Auditorium, that rotate among themselves in opposite directions. Face to face, participants have a single minute to introduce themselves to the person in front of them and thus meet the other participants and guests

FEST Nights - Every night during FEST, is party time.
